Comfrey Students Attend Social Concerns Day in Sleepy Eye

Comfrey students, grades 7 through 12 spent a day at Sleepy Eye Public School on November 15 being exposed to many teen issues. The day began with an hour of high energy, high volume music with a message. This was followed by an hour of dialogue on issues such as the power of advertising, mass media, patriotism, and being aware and thinking for yourself.

Next the students attended an hour session on their choice of thirteen different topics. All students attended their top choice which included prevention and care of athletic injuries, dealing with depression, health issues related to methamphetamine, tobacco, alcohol, and sexually transmitted diseases and many more.

The next hour included lunch in their cafeteria and exposure to health related careers. Lunch was followed by a large group session of all the guys, all the gals and all the teachers. Topics discussed in these sessions included abstinence, inner and outer beauty, power of music and ended with some time for questions. A final wrap up session of music and comments concluded the day before Comfrey students headed home .

A follow up with most grades took place in the Social Studies classes to survey the good and bad points of the day. Some conclusions were "the music was too loud", "we could not understand the lyrics" "the speaker was good" "the girls’ talk was awesome". The students felt the workshops were a hit and more opportunities to have more of them should be part of future days. Overall the day was a good exposure for the students and staff on a variety of topics.
